February 2009

February started and seemed to end very quickly. The due date was 2/22 but little did I know I wouldn't make it that far... My favorite part of that month before Will came were Fridays. Patrick seemed to have a lot of Friday afternoons off. I usually got off early on Fridays so we would always have dates. We would go to an early dinner and then to the movies. Or we would just stay home and watch a movie. It was a really great time for us to get some quality time before baby...

On February 9th I had a check up. I went to work that day. I didn't make it long at work. I remember feeling absolutely horrible. I was supposed to get a pedicure after the appointment that day but I just felt horrible so I decided to go home and watch a movie to get my mind off it... Patrick got home that night, we had dinner and went to bed as usual. At 2:30am it all began

Exerpt from my journal: It was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. I don't even like to use the typical adjectives to describe it. These words have lost the grandness of their meanings and can in no way describe how we feel. Oh well, I guess I will have to. Baby Will decided to come 12 days early. (Side note: Patrick sometimes calls him Jonathan, as does Savanna. We called him Jonathan for so long it's hard to make the switch.) My water broke at 2:30am on Tuesday, February 10th. I knew I should have gone to get a pedicure after the doctors appointment the previous day! I yelled to Patrick, "Something is coming out!" He immediately jumped out of bed to save the sheets and mattress. Luckily it was a slow break and everything on the bed survived. We actually had a pad down where I was sleeping from the hospital, one of the nice benefits to having a doctor as a husband! We were so excited we didn't know what to do. I called my mom, who was conveniently in Chicago! She asked me all sorts of questions to make sure it was my water breaking and when we came to the conclusion it was she hung up the phone and got on the earliest flight to DFW. She made it to the hospital at 8:45am, I don't think there is anything that would have stopped her! She even beat the rest of our family to the hospital. I decided I should take a shower and at least shave since my toenails were bare :). One of the nurses actually commented on my smooth legs! We also had to pack as I had been putting it off for days... We got to the hospital at about 4:30pm and got settled in. It was my desire to have as natural a birth as I could. I had it all planned out in my head. God had planned otherwise... I was not having consistent contractions and with my water broken, it was not going to go the way I had planned. My wonderful, patient doctor let me slowly get pitocin so I could try and handle the labor naturally. FYI, pitocin is not natural! After several hours of contractions and no progression Patrick talked me into an epidural so we could turn up the pitocin. My doctor had been coming in and out throughout the day and finally called to talk me into it as well. Patrick answered the phone and assured her I was on board. The funny thing is when you decide to have an epidural you really don't want to feel one more contraction. Too bad, it takes about 20 minutes for the whole process. After the epidural I was having a blast. I actually took a nap and woke up in time to push. I pushed for 23 minutes and at 2:31pm the most precious, amazing, magnificant, incredible, awesome (maybe if I use them all at once they will sound better) baby boy arrived! It was the coolest thing ever. I watched as he came out and I will never forget it... Again, thanks to everyone for their prayers and warm wishes. We are so thankful for our friends and family!

Arriving at the hospital!

Waiting...

Welcome to the outside!

Cousin Luke came for a visit in the hospital
Take me home!

My first bath at home

This is my favorite spot

I'm so little

The day we were supposed to be released we had a little hiccup. Will's breathing rate increased overnight and we had to put him in the NICU just to keep a monitor on him. He ended up being just fine and we were able to leave the next morning. That day was Patrick's OB Shelf test and we had to rush home all together so he could make it to his exam. We were so happy to be out of the NICU and home as a family... Here we go!

January 2009

Playing catch up....

January was a great, but uncomfortable month! We started the New Year in Steamboat with a great dinner to celebrate Ron and Azu's anniversary. The next day we traveled home and started to get ready for Will's arrival. I had an amazing shower with some really wonderful friends. After the shower my family helped get Will's room put together. We hung the shelves, positioned the furniture (several times) and put everything in it's place...

We also had a really special delivery in the month of January. On January 15, 2009, Luke Jeffrey Schlelgel was born!!!! I don't have a picture of him that day (not sure why) but I do have one of Jamie!
What a special day and I was really blessed to be a part of it. Funny story about that day: We were in the waiting room, waiting patiently for Luke to arrive. Everytime a baby was born they played a special song over the intercom. There were lots of babies being born that day, therefore the song came on a lot! Everytime the song came on, Pattycake (Jamie's mom) would bolt out of her seat and say, "Is that my baby!" Then she would take off down the hall to find out. It was hilarious. After about six time of this it finally was "our baby". Patty was trying to wait patiently in the hall to be invited in when this nurse passed her pushing a newborn to the nursery. Patty thought it had to be hers! She started running after the nurse. The man walking beside the nurse just gave her a strange look and said, "This is my baby." It was too funny. She finally got in the room to see "her baby" and all was well... Luke is the cutest thing.
